Stranger’s Disposition

Text: Psalm 119:17-24

Key Verse– I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me vs 19 NIV

Patriarchs and Saints of old all had a common disposition in their sojourn on earth- that of strangers. It not only speaks of brevity of life and stay in the world, it also reminded them that they were not possessors of the earth, at least not yet (Ps 32:12; 1 Pet 2:11). Do you live with such mindset?

Peculiar to strangers are certain experiences; they are often scorned, disrespected, disgraced, despised, reproached, and they face opposition and oppression of the proud ‘land owners’ vs 23. Therefore, our mentor, the Psalmist, identified the Word of God as his singular guide in this world that does not know him and is unknown to him- “Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors” vs 24. Whereas the world does not guarantee safety, yet the Scriptures assures, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” Pr 11:14. The Word of God- all of Scriptures are the counsellors that provide safety and we will be wise to consult with them.

There is only one problem which the Psalmist was quick to identify. Like the Ethiopian eunuch, we may read the Scriptures and yet lack understanding or insight. Therefore, the most earnest prayer, of our hearts and lips, as we approach the Word of God is “Open my eyes, so that I may see the wonderful truths in your law” vs 18 GNB. Since our safe sail through the world depends on the counsel of God’s Word, we must be earnest to pray that it’s riches will not be hidden from us vs 19.

There are many who are turning away from the will of God, seeking ways that are not recommended by the Word of God. Scriptures says there is a curse on them vs 21. May we not turn away but be steadfast in seeking the truth that will set us free to live as God would want us to. Amen

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, Open the eyes of my understanding in your Word that I may walk worthy of you. Amen
