Text: Psalm 119:137-144
Key Verse: Righteous are You, O Lord, And upright are Your judgments. Vs 137 NASU
God is a righteous God. He is does not just do what is right, He is the essence and standard of rightness. It is his nature to do what is right and that forever- Your righteousness is righteous forever… vs 142. He cannot for a moment stop being righteous or doing what is right as that would contradict and deny his nature. Therefore, we can say God is immutably and eternally righteous.
The Psalmist had revealed earlier that the Word of God defines and expresses his character. It means we can know God through His word. There are five characteristics of his word in this Psalm that help us to understand God’s righteousness more clearly.
- The Word of God is upright vs 137. His word is not crooked or distorted. It means that God is never dishonest in his dealings. He will not hide is real intention while portraying another. Therefore He is direct.
- It is righteous vs 138. God is just. He gives what is right and what is fair. His commandments are applied to all impartially yet his provisions to each one is according to what is deserved.
- It is faithful vs 138 God is dependable and trustworthy. From generation to generation, his word have been proven to be consistent and reliable. You can lean on his word and it will not fail you.
- It is pure vs 140. God’s word is not corrupted. It is not a mix of lies and truth. It is not a mix of evil and righteousness. It does not have hidden motives. It is as it is revealed- pure.
- It is true vs 142. There is no falsehood in the word of God. God cannot lie. All of God’s word is true- it is the exact representation of his mind, will and ways. What he says cannot be condemned because they are consistently true.
The goal of following Jesus is to become like him. To become like Christ, we must know him. His word is the key to knowing and becoming like him.
Prayer– Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live. Amen
