Text: Psalm 119:89-96
Key Verse: All things remain to this day because of your command, because they are all your servants vs 91
The Psalmist reveals the word of God as being eternal. He says all things- created elements of nature and living creatures owe their sustenance or continuance to the upholding power of the word of God. This is because they exist to serve God, meaning that they obey God’s word- “lightning and hail, snow and clouds, strong winds that obey his command” Ps 148:8 GNB. He went on to reflect on his own life and experiences, his deliverance from death, in spite of the wickedness of men, was due to obedience to the word of God: “But I’ll never forget the advice you gave me; you saved my life with those wise words” vs 93 MSG.
God and His Word are inseparable. Just as the words of a man reveal the man, the Word of God reveals God. We can safely say that the attributes of God are revealed in His Word. Here are a few of the attributes of the Word of God by the Psalmist- these are in nature some of the attributes of God.
- The word of God is eternal- vs 89; Ps 19:7
- The word of God sustains or upholds all things vs 91; Heb 1:3
- The word of God gives life- vs 93; Jn 6:63
- The word of God is limitless/perfect- 96
What then will you do with the word of God? The Psalmist prescribed 4 things;
- Delight in them by meditating on them- vs 92
- Do not forget them by memorizing them vs 93
- Seek them by reading and studying them vs 94
- Consider them by obeying their instructions vs 95
If all of creation are servants of God vs 91, how much more humans, especially believers in Christ? Our continuance and relevance depend on obedience to the word of God. Unless you position yourself as you ought to be-a servant of God- continuance and relevance are not automatic.
Prayer– I receive fresh grace for obedience to your word, O LORD. Amen
