Double-minded People

Text: Psalm 119:113-120

Key Verse- I hate double-minded men, but I love your law vs 113 NIV

It is not the Psalmist alone who hates double-minded people, God does too. According to James, a double-minded person is unstable in all his ways Jas 1:8. Such are unreliable. You may agree on something with a double-minded person in a moment, but soon after, he has changed his mind. When you return to ask, why he changed his mind, he will say, “no, let’s do what we said at first.” He is constantly changing like a wave of the sea. God says such will not receive anything from Him Jas 1:7. His heart is not fixed- he is afraid of failing or disappointing, he is influenced by different opinions of people and is not able to determine which one he should act on.

But more specifically, the Psalmist is talking about people who have not decided to commit to loving and obeying the Word of God. These on one hand love the world and on the other want a part of God. Their minds are not fixed in trusting God. They would want to go all the way with God but they also want to enjoy all that the world has to offer. They like to obey God when it is convenient but they will disobey without blinking if it will allow them get ahead. They can easily be mistaken in fellowship, so also in parties. They can talk spiritual languages where it is necessary but foul and festering words are not also  far from their mouths. With the same mouth they bless and curse. For them the unthinkable is possible Jas 3:9-12.

With these kinds of people as the majority in churches, how can the society be transformed? How will the unconverted be convicted of sin? How can the world in darkness make a distinction of light and darkness?

Double-minded Christians? That is a contradiction in terms but in reality there are many! Such are useless to Kingdom advance.

What is the cure for double-mindedness? “You are trying to follow God and the world at the same time. Make your thinking pure” Jas 4:8. Commit to God. It is a decision away.

Prayer– LORD, make my heart to be fixed on you that I may follow you wholeheartedly. Amen
