Text: Psalm 119:41-48
Key Verse– Let your mercies come also to me, O LORD- Your salvation according to Your word vs 31 nkjv
And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, For I have hoped in Your ordinances vs 43
The preserving power of mercy and truth combined echoes repeatedly in Scriptures; “… O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him” Ps 61:7; “Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me” Ps 40:11; even the establishment of a King (any leader), “Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy” Proverbs 20:28. Yet, it must be sought diligently. Here, the Psalmist prayed the LORD for mercy and truth, while showing us the significance of each.
# Significance of mercy– vs 41-42
- Then I will have an answer for everyone who insults me for trusting your word vs 42. Mercy is synonymous with salvation, which is a broad term for help, deliverance, to be free, safe, and to have victory. Therefore, one who trusts in God’s word will not be ashamed; he will not be at a loss for words because God’s help will be on his side. When God helps, even opposers see and testify Ps 126. May you receive God’s mercy today. Amen
# Significance of truth– There are three things I would like to point out among others, that the Psalmist mentioned, which we cannot talk about in details. Let us highlight with brief comments: vs 43-48
- Truth compels obedience– I will follow your teachings forever and ever vs 44 GW
- Truth sets free– I will walk around freely because I sought out your guiding principles vs 45 GW
- Truth demands we tell others– I will speak about your written instructions in the presence of kings and not feel ashamed vs 46 GW
In the New Testament, mercy and truth are revealed as grace and truth. It is the glory of Christ revealed to us. It is the Spirit of Christ. May grace and truth be with you today and always. Amen
Prayer– O LORD, appoint lovingkindness and truth to watch over and preserve me. Amen
