Text: Psalm 119:9-16
Key Verse: How can a young person keep his life pure? Vs 9 GW
I remember a preacher once said, “I flee youthful lusts,” and he was 66 years at the time! If at
66 years someone needs to flee the corrupting influences of this world, who is this young man or woman that the Bible refers to? And the question is often asked quietly within the hearts of many people. The answer is short and straight- By obeying God’s Word. It is not first about restoration from sin but about maintaining a healthy, pure life. You can do it by obeying the Word of God. There are no shortcuts!
There are seven practices that are healthy and can help our obedience. We can make them substitutes to obedience but they are only aids to obedience. What really helps in keeping our lives pure is our response in obedience to what God has said in His Word. So, what are the seven practices?
- Seek God wholeheartedly vs 10- this is foundational. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart Jer 29:13
- Study Scriptures diligently vs 11- Let the message about Christ completely fill your lives… Col 3:16
- Pay attention to the Holy Spirit’s teachings vs 12- But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him 1 Jn 2:27. The teaching of the Holy Spirit comes sometimes as we listen to teaching from God’s servants.
- Share your learnings with others vs 13- But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin Heb 3:13. Your sharing may help another to keep his way pure.
- Develop a strong appetite for God’s word vs 14- More to be desired are they [God’s Word] than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb Ps 19:10
- Give attention to meditation vs 15- but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night vs 2.
- Handle God’s Word affectionately vs 16- … I will not forget thy word Ps 119:16. How do you easily forget the one you love and cherish?
These are not necessarily sequential steps- they are all woven together to get us to being able to obey God’s Word more readily and easily.
Prayer– Lord Jesus teach me to do your will. Amen
