Text: Psalm 119:121-128
Key Verse- “I am your servant; deal with me in unfailing love, and teach me your decrees.” vs 124. NLT
Servanthood in God’s Kingdom is the basis for greatness. The one who leads must serve; But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant Mt 23:11 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant Mt 20:27. But such service and greatness are defined by certain characteristics. King David who had insight into the mind of God about greatness and servanthood from a spiritual perspectives said, “The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.” 2 Sam 23:3. And here in Psalm 119:121, he says, “I have done what is just and right…” Just (fairness) and right are the undergirding principles of servant leadership. God’s servant must be fair in his dealings to all men and must do what is right in all things.
Moreover, there is an attitude of dependence on God that a true servant of God exudes. He is not arrogant, presumptuous or self-confident. Rather, he depends on God to protect and vindicate him vs 121-122. He waits on God for help and for the fulfilment of God’s promises vs 123. He hopes in God’s mercy vs 124. He prays for wisdom and understanding vs 125. He depends on God to act even when things are falling apart and not according to God’s plan vs 126. Stating these things is a way of saying that a true servant of God, which every child of God ought to be, depends on God for all and in all things. He has conditioned himself to trust God in every circumstances.
Lastly, a true servant of God is not a lover of money first vs 127. He is not covetous like Gehazi neither does he love the things of the world like Demas. His delight is in the law of the LORD to learn from it and to obey it. Those who trust in uncertain riches cannot equally trust God 1 Tim 6:17. We are always called to choose between God and money once money becomes the subject. Lovers of money do not have regard or value for God- they will always act in a manner that shows that the things of this world are their preferences.
Are you a true servant of God? Do you act in all fairness and rightness? Do you trust and depend on God in all things? Is God your choice over mammon?
Prayer– Show your faithful love to me, your servant. Teach me your laws. Amen.
