Gift of remembrance

Text: Psalm 119:49-56

Key Verse– Remember your promise to me; it is my only hope. Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles vs 49-50 NLT

To remember is a blessing. Have you ever tried to remember something that you just thought about-maybe something you wanted to say or do, but could not remember it again? How frustrating it is. Then suddenly, like light turned on, it comes back to you. What delight it is to remember.

God never forgets, to ask the LORD to remember His promise is because we remembered- His Spirit reminded us. God’s promises are powerful- they give hope, they revive and they comfort. But I would like to paint a picture of comfort.

When a soul is agitated because of a loss or fear, hope may be shattered. At such a time there is need for comfort. To become calm and even cheerful in the midst of mourning or an overwhelming fear may not be attained through self-talk. Loss and fear are two enemies that we don’t pray for or want around us but they still find their ways into our lives. And whenever we go through these experiences, we need to remember God’s word of promise. The promise of God recalled is like a mother who draws near her inconsolable child who has become agitated either because of fear due to neglect or something has been taken away from him or her. His mother draws him near to give assurance and hope thereby he is comforted.

“For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” Rom 15:4 The word of God comes to us-parakaleō- and comforts us. This is the purpose of Scriptures- to give us hope through its comfort. May you be blessed with the gift of remembrance today- that God’s promises will flood your heart, causing sorrows and fears to flee away and hope revived.

Prayer– LORD, I receive the comfort that comes from your word of promise. Let my heart be revived and my life renewed by your Word. Amen
