Is your heart heavy?

Text: Psalm 119:25-32

Key Verse– My soul melts from heaviness; strengthen me according to your word vs 28 nkjv

We all want to be happy and joyful at all times. But in life there are many ups and downs. Nothing is constant. As the Preacher said, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” Eccl 3:1. Unfortunately, certain unpleasant seasons may be prolonged, leading to depression or despair. The Psalmist was there and many Saints have walked this road. The writer and a good number of you reading have had your own share- fair or not.

There are four conditions one may find himself or herself that can make the heart really heavy:

  • The Pain of Ill health– “My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word” vs 25. There is no better story to illustrate this point than that of King Hezekiah. In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death…I beseech thee, O LORD,…And Hezekiah wept sore 2 Kings 20:1-3. And by the word of the LORD, he was revived; he was healed and given more years. God is able to restore health and life to you. Will you call upon Him with the whole of your heart?
  • The Burden of sin and guilt– I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes vs 26. Again, let us appeal to the Scriptures. “For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah Ps 32:3-5. Will you confess that sin that has haunted you and let God take away your guilt and shame?
  • The grief of a loss– “My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Your word” vs 28. What have you lost? A relationship, a loved one, something very significant or irreplaceable? These things can cause deep heaviness of heart. But God is able to lift you out of it and give you great comfort if you release your loss to Him.
  • The weight of lying– “Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously” vs 29. Lying could go from being incidental, to intentional, and to becoming a lifestyle. To speak untruth is burdensome, how much more a fake life- pretentious living. May those trapped in this web find God’s deliverance in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

What is burdening your soul? What is making your heart heavy? Will you bring it to God today and exchange it for His peace and liberty.

Prayer– May my heart be humble to seek your help for my heaviness of heart. Amen.
