Rev 11:16-18
Kings are reputed for many things, and on the positive side, a king is expected to possess wealth-which is derived from his might or the might gives him wealth, and wisdom. King Solomon was a very good example of one who possessed these two qualities- might (wealth) and wisdom 1 Kgs 10:7. Queen Sheba was awestruck at the wealth and wisdom of Solomon when she visited because of the reports she had heard about him in her homeland. What she saw was more than what she heard. She came prepared to honour (a form of worship) King Solomon with gifts from her country. She was not disappointed.
Why relate this to God? As kings deserve honour because of their might and wisdom, much more the King of kings. The one who owns all and created all things. The Almighty God, the one who is All-Wise- the only Wise God. What can be offered to honour Him? He deserve all!
Let us think about His might for a moment. He is the Omnipotent God. There is nothing He cannot do according to His will. The leper who approached the LORD understood this. He said, “If you will, you can”! And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean Mt 8:2. Great theologian the leper was. If God would be God, that can be called God, He must be able to do whatever He wants to do. Paul confirmed this when he said, “…who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will” Eph 1:11. And He is also able to do more than what any man or woman can imagine or ask for Eph 3:20. Not just what one person can ask for but all that every human on earth ask or imagine, He is able to do. He is able to do the summation of all requests of all men on earth. Can you imagine that? This is the Almighty God, the King.
And He is the Only Wise God and the All wise One. There is no wisdom but from God. He is the source of all wisdom. He gives wisdom and does not reprove. Therefore, all beneficial human accomplishments whether in Science or Technology or Art etc come from Him. The summation of all wisdom in the world is but a fraction of His infinite wisdom.
Whereas Queen Sheba fainted when she saw all the glory of King Solomon, what would happen if she were to stand before the King of kings? Prophet Isaiah will answer that. When He saw the glory of God in the temple, what happened to him? He declared, “Woe is me!” Is 6:5. He did not just see the might and wisdom of the LORD of Hosts, He saw His holiness.
God is Holy. He is altogether separate (transcendent) from all His creation and He is separate from sin and evil. God is the standard of morality therefore He is the perfect judge. Notice that King Solomon, in his office as king, was also a judge. Queen Sheba affirmed that when she declared, “Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice” 1 Kgs 10:9. The office of the king seems to go with the responsibility of judging people. “The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God” 2 Sam 23:3. God is King and He is a just judge. He does not rob one to please another. He is perfectly fair and right in all He does.
We can only speak of these things with stammering lips. “Finitude cannot comprehend infinity.” But if mere men honour earthly kings, how much more should we bow before the maker and the mender of men. How much honour do you think the One who makes honoured men deserves? May the LORD give us understanding. May our eyes be opened to see the King in His glory. AMEN
