The First and the Last

“I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last” Rev 1:11 (8); KJV

The name by which the Lord introduced Himself to John in His glorious state is “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last.” That name is repeated severally in the book of Revelation. The name carries so much meaning that we are not able to fathom the depth presently. Before anything existed, I am and when all things would have passed away, I am… Everything exist only in Him. He is the beginning and the end of all things. In Him all things consist.

But there is something in the messages sent to the Churches that seem to describe an aspect of this name and what He desires through out all eternity. To the first Church, the Church in Ephesus, He said, “You have forsaken your first love.” Love is not love without devotion. It is a strong desire for something or somebody. That desire keeps the subject close to the object as much as possible. Our devotion to God which is a reflection of our love, is seen in our desire to always be in fellowship with Him. A desire to be with Him is one of the things that show our love. This is the first.

To the last Church, the Laodicean Church it was said, “I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears my voice and opens to me, I will come in and dine with Him.” This again is the expression of God’s desire to be in fellowship with His people. This is the last. The first and the last are one.

God has always sought fellowship with man as an expression of love. He it was who walked in the Garden of Eden in the cool of the evening, desiring fellowship with the cream of all His creation- Man. The same Lord when He called His Apostles to Himself, the Bible says, He did that so that they will be with Him… As He taught in the house of Martha, and the hostess was busy about many things thinking that the Lord was more pleased with meat and drink, the Lord pointed her attention to the fact that ‘one thing was needful’- fellowship with Him.

The Lord after His resurrection stood at the shores of the river where the disciples had gone to fish. As He called out to them, he asked them have you caught anything? They said No, then He directed so that they caught a horde of fish. But when they got to land, He invited them to come and dine. This is the fellowship that He sought with His people. To dine with us. To eat with Him and share with Him.

Notice that He said to the disciples at the last supper concerning the wine, I will not drink of it until I drink a new with you in my Father’s kingdom. The Lord is eagerly waiting for that time of dinning with His saints. He is longing for a time with you. Like the Church that had gone astray, He kept knocking, seeking to dine again with His sheep. How lovely it is when the Lord dines with His children. When He dines with us , He provides the meal. It is out of His own store that we partake and not our own resources.

May the Lord open your eyes to the heart of God for fellowship. May He grant you the depth of the riches in fellowship. May this desire become yours also; that daily you may seek to be with Him and long for His presence more than the presents He gives.
